The Granite City was originally introduced as a titled train by the Caledonian Railway in the Edwardian period and was named “The Granite City Express”. The name was dropped in 1914 but title was resurrected by the London Midland and Scottish Railway in July 1933. The train ran between Glasgow and Aberdeen. The title was withdrawn in September 1939 for the duration of the Second World War only to be re-introduced in 1949.
